Housing emerged as a top priority for Downtown, ranking second at the
December 1999 Downtown Summit and strongly emphasized in the survey and
written reviews of the Downtown Strategic Plan. The emphasis was on smaller
demonstration projects over mega-developments, and on creating a convenient,
service-oriented housing development process that can harness the power
of the private sector. Success in housing development downtown will be
measured by the increase in occupied units. The ultimate goal is to increase
the number of downtown housing units by 1500 over the next five years.
Downtown Buffalo 2002! is currently tracking three housing projects in
the downtown area. All of the housing projects involve the rehabilitation
and adaptive reuse of existing building stock.
See the newsletters section for the most
up-to-date information on each of these projects.
