Priority ProjectsThe list of priority project and additional planning recommendations is not entirely new. Between 1994 and 1999, the City of Buffalo has worked diligently with the community to develop a list of priorities to guide development in Downtown Buffalo. The first round of reviews, which included three public summits and one workshop, were held between 1994 and 1999. Out of these sessions a number of individual projects and programs were initiated. Additional interviews and focus groups among stakeholders Downtown were then employed to help frame the current draft Downtown Buffalo Strategic Plan, with the theme of establishing downtown as a good place to work, live, and play. The most recent round of reviews invited professional, public, and stakeholder input in response to the strategic plan. It includes the Downtown Buffalo 2002! Newsletter Survey that prioritized themes and projects identified in the Strategic Plan. It also includes the Downtown Buffalo 2002! Summit: From Planning to Action, which invited more detailed discussion of the plan in small-facilitated groups. Finally, it includes a series of lengthier written reviews by local advocacy groups, businesses, and other interested parties. Overall, the Summit and related reviews brought forth three clear messages: First, now that the important questions have been identified, be sure they are answered before each project is implemented. Second, get started now: move forward, reform bureaucratic obstacles and create central coordinating project managers. Finally, the public must be included in the development of all projects, and events like the Summit can help achieve that in a meaningful way. Out of this process, Downtown Buffalo 2002! has developed both planning and project recommendations related to the top priority issue areas: Living Downtown, Working Downtown, and Accessing Downtown. The following table identifies the Downtown Buffalo 2002! priority issue, planning, and project recommendations: Table 1. Issue, Planning, and Project Recommendations
